The development of the old Carlsberg brewery site in Copenhagen was featured in the Danish contribution to the 11th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia 2008, held in Italy this September.

Under the theme ‘Ecotopedia – walk the talk’, the Danish Architecture Centre focused on the challenges that cities create for the environment and society. It sought to share expertise and create discussion by presenting initiatives by Danish companies that are taking a global lead in real sustainable development.

Better cities create better lives

The Carlsberg development was chosen as an example of how to create better cities to create better lives.  Carlsberg’s, and its architects’, vision is to convert the brewery site into a new vibrant city centre, combining environmental, social and financial sustainability with quality of life.  It will show how a CO2 neutral city can be developed without compromising on the requirements of a 21st century lifestyle or the desire to preserve historically significant features.
