Carlsberg A/S has today acquired 95% of the shares of AB Svyturys in Lithuania for DKK 315 million.
Svyturys is the market leader in the Lithuanian beer market with annual sales of 350,000 hectolitres and a market share of 26%. The brewery which was founded in 1784 is situated in Klaipeda on the Baltic Sea coast of Lithuania.
The brewery was privatised in 1993 whereby the shareholding was taken over by the employees of the company. Later, the company has been listed on the Lithuanian Stock Exchange.
In today's transaction a number of mainly employee shareholders sold their shares at the price of 106 Litas per share which amounts to the total value of approximately DKK 315 million. According to the rules of the Vilnius stock exchange, Carlsberg will have to make an offer to the remaining shareholders at the same price
. Carlsberg sees the Svyturys investment as an entry into the Baltic beer market which has a size of 3.0 million hectolitres a year for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, of which the Lithuanian market is the biggest with 1.5 million hectolitres.
